So I Saw This Today:

GRRM

So the guy who says ‘fantasy is written in the language of dreams’ goes and makes the most drab and dreary fantasy setting out there?

Has this guy never been to Niagra Falls? Has he never looked through a fucking telescope, or at footage of the ocean floor, or even HEARD of the Nile or Amazon rivers? Has he never seen a picture of Ayers Rock, a bamboo forest or Naica Mine? Has he never, ever, in his entire life picked up a copy of National Geographic, or watched the Discovery Channel, or even browsed youtube briefly?

And this is only sticking to the geographic. Has he never studied Buddhism, never heard of people of Mongolia or Egypt, Greece, Rome or Persia? The ironworkers and teamsters responsible for building the world we know today? Has he not heard of psychology, sociology, physics or biology? Anatomy, art, music and film? Human fucking FLIGHT is lame to this man when it is achieved by hard work and the ingenuity of thousands, as opposed to someone writing about wax wings. We don’t read fantasy to find colour again, we read it to find new colours. To find novelty and creativity different from the novelty and creativity and beauty that surrounds us every day. Is George Martin so unimaginative he has to denigrate reality in order to wank his own chosen profession and pat himself on the back in the most banal and self-congratulatory way imaginable? And are you really going to fall for it?

Anonymous Rights

In response to the recent Westboro Baptist Church’s declaration that they would picket the vigil of the Sandy Hook victims, and the subsequent hacking of their personal computers and twitter accounts, I have this to say:

No, people, Anonymous is not in the right here. They are, in fact, and in the most disgusting way, destroying the privacy of citizens. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like the Westboro Baptist Church. Disliking a group does not revoke from them their rights; this is exactly the sort of thinking that fuels the WBC, yet at no point do they actively destroy the rights of those they, with such vitriol, detest. They would if they could, but they can’t because their lunacy ensures a deaf response to their words.

For the record, the only appropriate response to loud, angry people like the WBC is this, which comes with an uplifting little mantra (I guess an ‘Aggie’ is a member of the school?):

It is proposed that we respond with true Aggie spirit.
In response to their yelling, we will be silent. Like silver taps, like Bonfire Memorial.
In response to their signs of hate, we will wear maroon.
In response to their mob anger, we will form a line, arm in arm.

This is a silent vigil. A manifestation of our solidarity.

Now that is how you beat the Westboro Baptist Church. Not by diving into the shit and vomit that is the low end of the human spectrum. By showing that, no matter how hard they yell, we’ll ignore harder. We are better than they. We can’t do that by revoking the rights of any citizen. Ever. We’re not simply wallowing in the filth, we are bathing in it and calling ourselves clean. Worse than pigs.

Anonymous has simply proven that even a society based on enlightenment values can descend into tyranny. This is the mindset that breeds totalitarianism. We are willing to suspend the rights of the citizen – provided only that we hate.

UPDATE: What do you know? It still works.
