Islam Is Not A Race

I came across this in my facebook feed this morning. There are not enough faces, nor palms to place against them, for this kind of poor thinking.

Opinion- -try replacing 'Muslim' with 'Black' in... - Al Jazeera English

What kind of nonsense is this? How can people still be getting this so wrong, especially news journalists? Don’t they have a duty to maintain at least a modicum of integrity?

Islam. Is. Not. A. Race. To claim it is, is insulting to the millions of Punjab and Pashtun people of Pakistan – an incredibly Islamic state. Very few are Arabic. Nor are they Berber.

Indonesia is the most populous Muslim nation on Earth.

Is this question trying to say that Punjabs, Pashtuns, Arabs, Egyptians Berbers, Turks and Javanese are all the same race? This is lunacy akin to saying Canada and Mongolia are the same country.

The article is here, and the author doesn’t seem to have read Harris’ work. Murtaza Hussain also seems to miss one rather important distinction when he says “It’s worth remembering why making sweeping statements about “the Jews” and “the Blacks” became considered unconscionable behaviour in the first place. Both groups were once spoken of by racists and anti-Semites as though they were a homogenous mass of people, undifferentiated in any meaningful way and all sharing the same (largely negative) characteristics.”

The distinction missed is this: racism targets people based on who their parents were. Criticism of religion is not criticizing people for things they have no control over in this way. Harris and Dawkins are criticizing ideas. Ideas are not people, though they are held by people. Ideas really do affect the way people act, unlike their skin colour.

Religion does not come down to the melanin receptor distribution in your skin, Mr. Hussain. Thanks for trying though.

Dar al-Islam, Part One: The House of Islam

So let’s see who we’re playing as.

Where's all his family?

Yes, hi. You would be Koriaur Kalmen, Emir of Alexandria. I’m Snarkangel, nice to meet you.

Yes indeed.

I can’t help but notice you aren’t married. That needs to be changed.

I do?

Sure, why not?

Really? No argumentation? Not insane ‘I DO WHAT I WANT BITCH’ proclamations?

Why would I say something so horrible?

Sorry, I’m just paranoid. Been playing too much Game of Thrones lately. You’re certainly no Joffrey.

It’s best you don’t ask. Let’s look at the world and our place in it. We need to know what surrounds us before we try to conquer it.

Here’s the eastern Mediterranean. The Abbasid Dynasty controls the Levantine Coast and Mesopotamia. The Byzantine Empire is quite possibly the première empire in the world right now, but they are in the middle of a long, slow decline. The Tulunid Dynasty controls Egypt – and since we are Alexandria, that makes them our lords.

But this will change.

That sounds suspiciously sinister…

What are you talking about? Ambition is a good thing! But first, find a wife!

Well, there is this one woman…

Go on.

She likes poetry.

Is… Is that it?

She’s a Grey Eminence and Regent for the Emirate neighbouring ours.

Why haven’t you already married her?

Well… I never asked? I’m nervous, okay?

Seriously? You’re Emir of Alexandria, and asking a woman’s hand in marriage stops you cold.

Lady bits scare me.

You’re afraid of vagina? Get over yourself. Ask that woman out! What’s her name?

Well, go get her, tiger!

There, was that so hard?

Oh, come off it. You did great! And look, Ahmad Tulunid, your Sultan, wants to make you Grand Vizier of Egypt!

See what happens when you assert yourself? The whole world falls into place!

Thanks, creepy voice in my head!

No problem, Koriaur. We’ll make a good team. Together, we’ll take over America!

Never mind. Besides, you won’t even be alive by then. That’s not for another seven hundred years. In the meantime, don’t let your ambition falter just because you’re Grand Vizier! You’re going to need more than a fancy title and some minor responsibilities if your going to fulfil my plans! I suggest having children, and gaining more power here in Egypt. The Tulunid’s are decadent, weak like overripe fruit, rotting from within. It’s your job to become Sultan!

I like the sound of that!

I knew you would! It seems others like the idea too. Sheikh Yahya of Benghazi has formed a coalition of independence-seekers, and has since been joined by the Sheikh Milad of Cyrenaica . As of now, they are not hostile, but their peaceful negotiations with Sultan Ahmad may fall apart. If you were to join this faction, it would be a huge boon to the movement, and a huge detriment to Ahmad’s legitimacy. However, I doubt we are strong enough to challenge the Sultan so soon. It may be best to let this faction fester in Ahmad’s side, and see what happens.

I thought you wanted more proactivity?

Well, yes. But there is a time and a place.

So I guess making Glitterhoof into my Grand Vizier was a bad idea?

I’m sorry, what?

I sure know how to pick ’em… Still, he’s no Joffrey.

Seriously, who is Joffrey?

Don’t worry about it. The Benghazian Independence has been crushed. Good thing we weren’t on their side!

I didn’t even notice they’d risen!

Me neither. In other news, the Shia schismatics are gaining traction in the eastern deserts of Arabia.

I can see this causing strife for many centuries to come.

That’s a little harsh, don’t you think?

You wanted me to be a go-getter. So I’m going to go get some wood to burn the Shia with.

Anonymous Rights

In response to the recent Westboro Baptist Church’s declaration that they would picket the vigil of the Sandy Hook victims, and the subsequent hacking of their personal computers and twitter accounts, I have this to say:

No, people, Anonymous is not in the right here. They are, in fact, and in the most disgusting way, destroying the privacy of citizens. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like the Westboro Baptist Church. Disliking a group does not revoke from them their rights; this is exactly the sort of thinking that fuels the WBC, yet at no point do they actively destroy the rights of those they, with such vitriol, detest. They would if they could, but they can’t because their lunacy ensures a deaf response to their words.

For the record, the only appropriate response to loud, angry people like the WBC is this, which comes with an uplifting little mantra (I guess an ‘Aggie’ is a member of the school?):

It is proposed that we respond with true Aggie spirit.
In response to their yelling, we will be silent. Like silver taps, like Bonfire Memorial.
In response to their signs of hate, we will wear maroon.
In response to their mob anger, we will form a line, arm in arm.

This is a silent vigil. A manifestation of our solidarity.

Now that is how you beat the Westboro Baptist Church. Not by diving into the shit and vomit that is the low end of the human spectrum. By showing that, no matter how hard they yell, we’ll ignore harder. We are better than they. We can’t do that by revoking the rights of any citizen. Ever. We’re not simply wallowing in the filth, we are bathing in it and calling ourselves clean. Worse than pigs.

Anonymous has simply proven that even a society based on enlightenment values can descend into tyranny. This is the mindset that breeds totalitarianism. We are willing to suspend the rights of the citizen – provided only that we hate.

UPDATE: What do you know? It still works.

Three Hurrah’s for Germany, Part Seven: The Closing Decades

Fascism in France

The truce between Germany and France means Germany cannot fight the now-legitimized Fascist rebellion that grips its western neighbour. Ethnic Germans are hunted in the streets of Paris and Orleans, arrested or executed. German shops are closed and burned. Revenge and revanchism reign supreme.

Fascism in America

I take my eyes off of North America for one decade and shit goes sideways!

The Confederate States of America turn Fascist again, the United States takes northern Texas (Rio Grande has the south). California declares independence from Mexico.

Then things get… interesting.

Oh dear. America, once the worlds greatest beacon of liberty and freedom, has fallen to Fascism. Another Great War looms, this time initiated by Germany. The United States declares war against the Fascist Dictatorship in Mexico – a war between these two nations is good for Germany, distracting as it does our enemies in America and the Fascist regime in Mexico.

The war starts much like the last, with a handful of Great Powers combining to face this industrial and military giant.

New England and the Atlantic Northeast fall in short order, including Washington D.C.

Fascist Mexico falls to American military might, leaving my ally in Rio Grande exposed. Armies are diverted from the Northern to the Southern Front, slowing the war effort, which includes two different Wargoals: Great War (to dismantle the American Empire) and Install Democracy – I will not make the same mistake as I did in France.

After a short push by the American Armed Forces, Germany is back on the offensive, and an end to this Great War is in sight.

Damn it, Jacobians!

A simultaneous Fascist rebellion in Canada creates a three-way Civil War – Jacobin Anarcho-liberals, Fascists, and Loyalists – bringing Canada to its knees. Jacobin rebels in America aid the cause of freedom.

North America after the Great War.

This puts Mexico in a disturbingly powerful position. Should they start warmongering, they will face the infinite might of Liberal Germany!

A few short interventions in Fascist CSA and Mexico turns North America into… Well, into a patchwork mess:

I don't think this is what North America looked like in 1934. I blame the lack of a WWI. Yes. That is the problem here.

That said, a First World War is right around the corner, as the Fascist Republic of Britannia annexes Venezuela and bites off a chunk of both Brazil and Qing China. It may not be long before Greater Germany and Britannia face off.

World War I

Germany declares war on Fascist France, which is attempting to reunite its lost Occitanian provinces in the south. Britannia, ally of France, declares war against Greater Germany. Germany turns this conflict into a Great War, and suddenly the whole world is at war. From China to Brittany, the Ottoman Empire to South Africa, Canada to Argentina, the nations of the world gear for war. German troops board their transports, ready to invade the British mainland through Wales and across the Straights of Dover.

Germany is surrounded. Russia joins on the side of Fascism, pitting Germany against Britannia, France and Russia – three Great Powers and their Puppets, Satellites and Spherelings.

Another Blitzkrieg into France.

The British Campaign proceeds with mediocrity.

While on the Eastern Front, things go poorly.

How will WWI play out? Will Germany defeat the vile forces of Fascism and totalitarianism in Europe?

Who knows?

Yes, Victoria II ends in the Year of Our Lord, 1936. Let’s see the impact an early, true unification of Greater Germany had on the world (I’ll bet it’s negligible):

North America

South America

North Africa

South Africa

The Middle East

India and Southeast Asia

The Far East

And finally, Europe

The Final Score

So, dear reader; how was the war won? Was the war won? And by whom?

That’s for you to decide (and maybe leave your ideas in the comments)

Danke Sehr!

Three Hurrah’s for Germany, Part Six: Germany, Defender of Freedom and Liberty!

Fascism in America

The Fascist Party of America takes control of the United States. It’s a showdown between Communism and Fascism, North and South!

This cannot be left alone. Democracy must be defended, liberty upheld. Germany gears for war. But first, Fascism and Communism must be rooted out of my allies.

At the same time, Polish Nationalists rise up in Russian Warsaw, securing the region’s inclusion in the growing Polish Fascist dictatorship. I put a quick end to such silliness – though Poland retains Warsaw, they are not allowed their dictatorial rule.

The United States continues its aggressive wars against the CSA, even takes land from Canada and Mexico. This has to stop, before such violent extremism becomes intercontinental – as it has already begun to do in places like Poland, Denmark and Spain.

Something happened in Spain.

The German-American War is declared, with the intent of reducing American military might – the Cut Down to Size Wargoal. Next will be the CSA, but for now the United States are a far bigger threat. They have even intervened in Hawaii and the Philippines, annexing the island nations.

New York, Long Island, Atlantic City, Philadelphia and, to the west, Detroit and Denver, are quickly occupied. There has been no American resistance, as the Yank armies are busy waging war against the CSA.

With a Mexican intervention in Texas, the US-CS War, and now the German-American War, Fascist America falls. An emergency election is forced upon them, and the Liberal Party wins by a landslide. Freedom wins the day in the North.

Now to do the same in the Communist South. It goes just as smoothly as the war in the North.

Well that was… That was anticlimactic.

I was really hoping this War of Ideologies would play out more…  tight. Close to the knuckle. But no, Germany just curb-stomped both States of America with ease. This makes every Great Power at least Democratic, though not necessarily liberal; the United Kingdom jumps between Communist and Socialist, France keeps dipping into Fascism (though remains mostly Reactionary). Spain, despite its recent disintegration, remains an agitator in colonial politics, and is in fact a Communist Proletarian Dictatorship. Still, they aren’t threatening anyone – they are just annoying.

Great War on the Horizon

This can only end well...

Meanwhile, the Great Powers of Europe have expanded their colonial efforts into the Balkans – Bulgaria has been split between the Ottoman, British and Dutch Empires. It seems a Great War is inevitable as the forces of freedom face down the armies of extremism and dictatorship.

Russia and Bukovina (the little orange bit in the lower-centre) invade Poland - Russia for Warsaw, and Bukovina for Russian control over West Galicia.

After so many revolutions and counter-revolutions in Poland, I’ve given up on keeping Poland in my Sphere. Still, Polish freedom has come at so great a cost. I’d hate to see the country divided and subsumed back into the Russian Empire.

While Germany prepares to face down the Russian Empire, potential allies in the fight for democracy fall into brutal warfare all along the Swiss Alps and African colonies:

This games first Great War. Not quite a World War, but certainly bigger than anything I've seen so far.

American Patriots take over in New England, subsuming the minor North American state into the United States.

I could press my (empty) claim to the land, but the people have spoken. ‘Tis a shame the revolution turned violent.

Italy slowly gains the upper hand in its war against France, but a sudden Jacobin rebellion on the home front might turn the tides in France’s favour. Germany remains isolated from this Great War.

Well, I was complaining about Spanish totalitarianism...

Great War Comes to Germany

And it’s not the Russians! It’s those pesky French; their alliance of France-Canada-Ottoman Empire has declared war against Germany in a Great War – likely to retake  Elsaß-Lothringen and dismantle Greater Germany. This would put France in an easy first place among the Great Powers. Far ahead of even the United Kingdom, which still sits in a distant third. Germany would be reduced to a pathetic shadow of its current greatness – all Cores go to their original owners, so I would lose Friesland, Heligoland, huge swathes of eastern and southern Germany, and almost every colony in Africa.

Then again, I can do the same to France when I win.

Germany's blitzkrieg start.

Germany makes a quick push into the French heartland, reaching the province of Ile de France in weeks, the outskirts of Paris itself within a month.

The Battle of Rouen is shaping up to be the decisive battle of this war, while a French army is driven into the sea and destroyed at Dunkirk.

The Great War ends with a French defeat.

The Great War is ended! All that remains is dividing the spoils.

No, that barf-green smudge in southern France is not Vichy, but Occitania.

As you can see, the United Kingdom gets quite a hefty chunk of Africa, from which the Brits had almost been excluded during the Scramble for Africa.

French colonies around the world are split off, many becoming independent sovereignties, some going into German hands for safekeeping – no more Fascist rule in Africa! Russia, the UK and the USA, who were all a minor part of the Great War, gain their own holdings. As do Brazil and Italy, for some reason.

With the end of the Franco-German War, an election is called.

Oh dear.

Revanchism hits France hard, leading to a massive upsurge of Fascist support in the newly-democratic country. An utterly massive Fascist rebellion spreads across that nation.

Over half-a-million Fascist rebels in Paris - which is defended by German troops.

Wave after wave of Fascist rebellion rises again and again in France. The combined might of German and French armies cannot hold them at bay. Over one million troops are committed to the Battle of Paris.  Even if liberty is victorious against this vile rebellion, France will have been nearly depopulated, it’s young men dead in the streets of its battle-wracked capital. In the end, 1.1 million Fascists died in Paris alone, another 750,000 across France. On the other side, ‘only’ 100,000 Germans died protecting French freedom. When another wave of thousands-strong Fascist armies spread across France, Germany withdraws. France falls.

Three Hurrah’s for Germany, Part Five: Germany, Total and Whole

Wait, what’s this?

That, friends, is the Suez Canal. Awesome.

Can I get a Fourth Hurrah, anyone?

Colonialism in Africa, and the Ottoman Question.

The Russian-German War (and the Franco-German War)

War between Germany and Russia has long been inevitable, and finally it comes. Russia invades Germany. Germany responds with overwhelming force. After only six months of fighting (and not a single German military loss), Germany has Denmark as a puppet and Poland acquires a small tract of land. I would have pushed for more Russian disintegration, but France declared war again. Luckily, my reserves have already mobilized and are standing guard in Elsaß-Lothringen. They will hold long enough for my proper military to counter-attack.

This is also an excellent opportunity to take Friesland from the Netherlands, as they have joined in war against me. I’ll see what I can do about picking France apart as well.

So far so good.

In the Colonies, German troops push back against Algerian Colonial armies in North Africa, and against Congolese Colonials farther south. The Netherlands falls swiftly to a concerted German effort, freeing up two more armies for the war in France.

A year passes.

This is taking entirely too long.

Portugal falls to Carlist Spain, and the Spanish military moves into France. This taxes my already overextended military, which has pushed deep into France. Canada (now a Great Power) offers Germany an Alliance and joins the war. Their navy puts pressure on that of France and Spain, while my new Hungarian allies relieve my armies in France. It turns into a clusterfuck of epic proportions when the UK, eager to regain its long-lost glory (they’ve been in third place for a few decades now) declares war on France. Their navy is still nothing to scoff at, nor is their military. They may not be my allies in this war, but they are my friends.

A short while later, Western Europe looks like this:

Oops, I broke the UK too.

Germany Complete!

Taking Heligoland is easy since I have a core there – the Warscore required to take it is low.

Forcing the freedom of Wales, not so much.

What to do Now?

The year is 1889, and Germany has unified all ethnic Germans under one rule. All German Cores belong to me; all German-majority provinces, the same. I have little desire to turn all of Europe grey – not that I couldn’t do that, mind. I have a military more powerful than any two lesser Great Powers combined – though this is not the same thing as the ability to defeat two combined GP’s. I’ve angered Russia, France and the UK recently, and my only GP ally is across the pacific. Canada seems to be making nice headway in North America; a divided and weakened USA has made Canada into a powerful North American state. The CSA is dying; rebellions and constant wars against their northern cousins have worn them down. Though they still control much of the land they ended the Civil War with, their armies are tired and weak. Africa is almost half colonized by Germany, with the other half between France and the UK.

Dem wimmenz, am I right? (I am not right)

I enact Woman’s Suffrage. In response:

More. Jacobin. Rebels.

Speaking of rebellion, all across the United and Confederate States, massive Socialist movements have taken up arms, attempting to overthrow the governments of North America. Though they are unsuccessful in the United States, the Confederacy becomes Red in a year.

A year later, and the CSA and USA are at war. From this bitter conflict arises a new ideology; the Third Way.

The States are split between the Communist Confederacy and the growing Fascist North. Germany, paragon of liberalism that it is (no, really), may be called upon to intervene in North America. For the freedom of the oppressed and the safety of sovereign states. I begin to build influence among the only remaining democratic nations of North America: Newfoundland, New England and Rio Grande. Canada, while democratic, is a Great Power, and therefore cannot be influenced. Still, an alliance with this bastion of freedom in the America’s would be good.

This is what North America looks like, by the way:

The United States continues to become more and more extremist to match their Communist neighbours to the south. Mexico is Socialist, but staunchly opposed to the Communist CSA.

Fascist ideologies spread to Germany, but they remain far underground, represented among a vast minority of the German people.

Mexican expansionism into the United States does not sit well with Canada, which declares a War of American Freedom against the Mexican government. The United Kingdom joins on the side of Mexico, and I again find myself dragged into a war against the UK. My navy is no match for the British Royal Navy, but a quick amphibious raid through Wales (who offered me military access) sees over a fifty thousand German Rifle Guards deep in England. A month later, another army, then another, lands on the shores of England.

That's well in excess of one hundred thousand troops on either side of the Battle of London.

The war in England goes well...

The war in North America does not.

One would think the United States would eagerly join a war to gain its own territory back, but this is not the case.

A new century has arrived! A modern era of peace, prosperity and personal liberty!

With Great Britain entirely occupied, only Ireland remains under total British control - and the war in North America seems to be turning, with British colonies in the Bahamas occupied, and the capital of Mexico falling without a fight.

The war ends in a White Peace, and Germany moves into the new century with a glitter in its eye, Paragon of Liberty and Freedom.

Next Time: Fighting totalitarianism in all its forms!

Three Hurrah’s For Germany, Part Two: Jacobin, Jacobin, Jacobin

Preparing Against France

Or Russia, I’m not sure which yet. France has Alsace-Lorraine, which I need to truly form Germany, but they are powerful; far more powerful than I, at the moment. Unfortunately, my military took a good thrashing against Austria, while France came in long after I had smashed the majority of Austrian might. As such, they have a few stacks of troops, while I have only two.

Before I can worry about war against the French, however, I need to pay off the massive debts I accrued over the course of the four-year war. With some careful cuts and tax hikes, I manage to balance the books – and even expand my new-fangled rail system! The first trains of Prussia run from Berlin to Konigsberg. Capitalists soon pick up the slack, and Prussia will have a nation-wide rail system within a few years.

The current First Minister of Prussia is nothing more than a placeholder, neither successful nor particularly detrimental to the state. This is not good enough, and I manufacture a scandal by which to remove him from the office. With the death of the King in Prussia in 1840, plus the replacement of this uninteresting minister, I may be able to get this government off the ground and pass some reforms. The new First Minister is appointed; a Military Man! This is good news, I think.

Oh no!

This is one of the first big decisions added in the POP Demands Mod. What I choose here can have massive effects on the game.

I take pity on the decayed Ottoman Empire; it is so far reduced from what it once was – a descent I am sure will continue regardless – that I want to stave off the inevitable as long as possible. If the Ottomans fall now,  it could radically alter Middle Eastern politics, something I don’t want at the moment. I’d rather have a unified Germany when the Empire finally rots to the core. Support the Empire it is!

And finally, South Africa

I can also use this war as an excuse to steal Suez from Egypt. Though the Suez Canal will not be built for a very long time, I want to be the one to do it. The commercial benefits certainly won’t hurt either, nor will establishing Prussia as a colonial power.

While I wait for my armies to assemble and board their transports, news reaches the throne.

The Age of Liberalism has come!

This is going to cause problems. Nationalist and suffrage movements tend to be more violent in this period, leading to more common rebellions. I cannot face Egypt, stare down France, and hunt for rebels at the same time. France will be left alone.

Speaking of rebels…

As if Austria (now ranked 36th among world powers) didn’t have enough trouble with Sardinia-Piedmont still demanding the release of the already-free Lombardian people, Jacobin rebels have infested the country. There might be a regime change in Austria soon.

No matter; Austria will be under my rule soon enough. I need not worry about the Jacobin movement south of the border. I send a small first expedition into the Mediterranean, where they will land north of Cairo and take the city. Unfortunately, Prussia’s minuscule navy cannot ferry a large army with any speed, so the invasion of Egypt will come piecemeal.

The Jacobin’s force their new government on Austria, forming Austro-Hungary. Also, Italy formed and I gained a Humiliate Cassus Belli on the new state – one that I have no intention of using, though perhaps in the future I might force Italy to split apart again to secure my borders.

The Oriental Crisis comes to an end, and Prussia has a choice; end our own war against Egypt, or continue our agression.

Screw it, I want Suez. WAR!

Egypt immediately offers Suez, and I take it. That was easy.

Prussia has a colony! I begin a National Focus campaign to entice German immigration into the Suez Region. It’s my own little New World (except it’s Egypt, and therefore older than Prussia. Shut up.) New trade comp[anies are established, though this causes strife among the Prussian Upper House; the Capitalists want free trade within the new colony, while the Aristocracy demands privileged, state-controlled companies hold the commercial aspects of our new holdings.

Of course I side with the Aristocrats. Normally, I like to encourage Capitalists, but free trade in so new a colony would be a disaster; there is nothing to trade! The Suez economy would collapse and not recover for decades.

Fun fact: the more control the government maintains, the more control the player has. As liberal ideas take hold and power moves into the hands of the people, the player has less and less control – which can be good, since the AI is very intelligent and can usually run the country for you – but only once you have a working economy/production model. The AI is also vastly superior at maintaining the vast and brain-numbingly complex empires of the late game, taking a huge load of stress of the player in the late game.

Speaking of liberal ideals…

Damn Jacobins. Get off my lawn!

The Jacobins are Anarcho-Liberalists, a violently liberal movement. The dichotomy of these hate-spewing, racist, religiously intolerant anarchists calling themselves ‘liberal’ might seem strange to a modern audience, but keep in mind that this was the beginning of the Liberalist movement. Political experimentation was all the rage; it is from this era that the very first Socialist/Communist ideas began to form, though they would not actually spread for decades more. True laissez faire capitalism quickly failed, but the wonders of free trade economies is that they are very adaptable and self-correcting; though pure libertarian economies failed, slight deviations of th form proved durable and effective.

But these guys? Fuck the Jacobins. That’s what I intend to do.

AND I DO. In a few months, all 250,000 Jacobin rebels have been killed or routed. Just as I finish with this, however, I catch wind of Russian propaganda; a drumming-up of international support for war against Austria-Hungary. Though I have every intention of subsuming Austria into Greater Germany, Russian expansionism will not be tolerated. I forge an alliance with Austria-Hungary;  any Russian aggression will be met with Prussian steel and bullets! Unfortunately, Reactionary rebels have infested my southern neighbour – likely in reaction to the Anarcho-Liberal Jacobin coup. Another regime change would mean an end to our alliance and would leave Austria-Hungary open to Russian intervention. Luckily, a Military Access Agreement is met, and my armies crush the Reactionaries in Vienna, ending the rebellion there.

A sign of things to come?

In fact, German Pan-Nationalists have risen all over the place! I like where this is heading! Wurttemberg joins my Sphere, and Bavaria is currently being occupied by these Pan-Nationalists. Now that all of Germany (except Austria) is in my SoI, I merely need to wait until 1850 and the State & Government technology to unlock before I can form the North German Federation – of course, by then, I might be able to form Greater Germany without the intermediary step.

All this liberal agitation and rebellion has got the Prussian people talking about a constitution and an end to the absolute monarchy. I’m tempted to agree… Voting is not yet implemented, but State-Run Unions and Naturalization of Immigrants is easing all but the most militant of liberals. The suffrage movement cannot be ignored forever.

Let’s take a look at the rest of the world, shall we?

This is a strange North America…

South America looks okay. Not that I would know what a proper 1844 South America would look like.

Far East Asia, with Britain in control of Hong Kong and Portugal in control of Macao.

The Middle East. Everything looks good here.

Middle and North Africa

And finally, South Africa

Next Time: Taking on Russia and France. I promise!

Three Hurrah’s for Germany, Part One: The Plan

But First!

What the hell is Victoria II anyway?

Good Question, Me!

Victoria II numbers among one of my favourite games – I have certainly sunk in excess of two-hundred hours into it. This may be because of its dizzying complexity and the sense of world-spanning scale (this may be caused by Vicky II being a game of world-spanning empires, fyi).

I have always had a soft spot for Germany throughout history – from the Germainic tribes arrayed against the Roman Empire, through the Holy Roman Empire (funny how that one worked out), the dissolution of said Empire (the state of affairs as of the beginning of the game) and the unification of all German speaking peoples under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, all the way up to the modern day.

I just like Germany, okay? Even when playing Hearts of Iron III, I tend to play Germany – or Canada, because there is nothing cooler than kicking Nazi butt as a tiny country of badass Canucks. The Nazi’s make easy enemies to hate.

But Nazi Germany is not this Germany. This Germany is Prussia, the northern of the two German Great Powers – the southern being Austria.

But What’s the Plan?

Another excellent question, me! The plan is simple; unite Germany under one banner, remove all non-German states from the Empire, and secure my unified Germany against our enemies – Russia in the east, France in the west, Italy (should it ever unify) in the south, and the United Kingdom – the British Empire itself – around the world. Perhaps even supplant the Brits as the #1 Great Power on Earth.

Europe in 1836. Prussia and its Sphere of Influence in the north, Austria and it’s puppets in the south. The Middle East is dominated by the waning Ottoman Empire and its Egyptian subordinates. In the west, Spain is slowly decaying, while French Liberalism sweeps the continent. Italy is just as fractured as Germany, while there, just off the coast, sits the loathsome homeland of the Brits.

Incidentally, I’m playing with the expansion pack A House Divided (because no media including the American Civil War can avoid the phrase). In addition, I’m playing the incredibly excellent POP Demands Mod, which I heartily recommend to all.

Just Get On With It Already!

Here’s (part of) the Politics screen. There’s a lot of information, but here you can see Prussia’s government split and the Rights of Man – a decision that isn’t a decision, really; all men are born equal! Let us start our great country down the path of liberty early!

Know what? I don’t like this government. Immediately, I force a change of governing bodies (it’s good to be the king!). The Nationale Partei (Reactionaries) are now in charge, giving me access to State Capitalism. I can mandate the construction of factories and goods myself, without waiting on the whims of whiny Capitalists.

Prussia’s next priorities are balancing the economy and production, then working on building up our great military – we will need to war against both Austria and France in the coming decades in order to unify Germany – Austria for the obvious reasons, and France in order to seize the provinces of Alsace-Lorraine. With that in mind, I use my points of National Focus in my most populous regions, encouraging the population to soldiery. This won’t last long – National Foci are excellent tools, wasted on military matters – but I must be ready for anything. Russia denied my diplomatic overtures, and no alliance has been forged with the Bear in the East – this means they could turn on us any time, and may even ally with my soon-to-be enemies.

Enemies like Denmark, who holds German regions as its puppet – namely, Schleswig-Holstein. To form the North German Federation, I will need to wrest this region from Danish hands. Unlike most other German states, this Schleswig-Holstein will not be won through diplomacy, but through force of arms.

Seriously, what is Denmark going to do? Scowl at me?

Luckily, military action to force the release of a puppet incurs a minuscule infamy penalty. I go about spreading propaganda and slinging international mud on the Danes, justifying my war against them. In a few months time, my people will be ready – eager – to fight for the release of their cousins.

And so it is. I even call in my allies to help me fight this war – what better way to cement a military partnership than war?

The Prussian-Danish War. Yes, that man is standing on his horse. Smells Like Dwarf Victoria?

While my two main armies fight in Schleswig-Holstein, my cavalry made a lightening raid on Copenhagen – capitals are worth the most Warscore, which is how the game determines the winning side and the likelihood of this-or-that Wargoal being accepted or dismissed. In this case, the Wargoal is the release of Schleswig-Holstein, though now that I am at war, I can add new Wargoals without justification. I decide to forcefully add Denmark to my Sphere of Influence (fun fact; I’m not sure if sphering a country also sphere’s its puppets. If so, releasing Schleswig-Holstein would in fact be detrimental). I don’t really want Denmark in my Sphere, but the prestige bonus for successfully adding a country to your Sphere is nice, and I’m going to need all the prestige I can get if I want to overcome the British Empire as the greatest of the Great Powers.

It seems the French have added the same Wargoal, but since I started this war, I get to choose the terms of peace – and French empowerment is not among them. I easily force the release of my German cousins and add Denmark to the Prussian Sphere of Influence (SoI). Unfortunately, this puts me in a truce with the newly-free Schleswig-Holstein, meaning I cannot influence them for five years. This leaves the gates wide open for Austria to Sphere them. It also means I cannot move my troops out of Denmark, as S-H sits between Denmark and Prussia.

To offset Austria’s influence head-start, I invest in some S-H industry. Building factories in foreign land will provide influence bonuses to me, and penalties to other countries.

And so the war of words begins. Prussia vs. Austria for control of Germany. Prussia begins the game with an inordinate number of sphered countries – most of northern Germany, in fact – while Austria only has a handful to hold on to. I have to spread out my influence to keep my many minor spherelings. Prussia will not be gaining overseas allies for a long time.

It seems the Russian Empire has gone Bankrupt, giving me the Repay Debts Cassus Belli (Cause for War, essentially). I can force them to reimburse me monies owed, as they borrowed money from the National Bank of Prussia and have now defaulted. This might be an opportunity for further Wargoals – namely the release of its western reaches, creating a buffer state between Russia and Prussia, keeping the Bear from interfering in my Grand Unification.

Unfortunately, the bulk of my army is still trapped in Denmark, losing men to supply issues – the Danes certainly aren’t going to supply them! I’m working on getting military access through S-H, but it’s been slow going. They don’t seem to trust me after I wrecked their armies and occupied their capital a year ago. Thin-skinned pansies!

But then Austria goes bankrupt too. Nevermind Russia, I need to split Austria into tiny little pieces! In order to create the Greater German Empire, Austria must be under my control – either Sphered or Puppetted. Either way, Austria must no longer be a Great Power, which means reducing its military might, industrial capacity and international prestige. The Repay Debts Cassus Belli gives me the perfect oportunity to start a war without incurring infamy. If it goes well, I’ll simply add more Wargoals as I go along. With S-H finally granting military access, I can move my experienced armies south to meet my new men along the Austrian border. A quick push to Vienna should give me the Warscore needed to split off some non-German pieces of Austria – pieces I don’t want included in my Greater German Empire anyway!

While I’ve been busily adjusting my war-plans, it seems the United Kingdom has invaded Qing China, seeking to wrest the city of Hong Kong as a distant Asian colony. Seeing an opportunity, France declares against the United Kingdom, taking Belgium from the Empire’s SoI. While I support any war between other Great Powers, I was hoping for French support against Austria in the coming war; they are erstwhile allies. No matter. I shall demand they join me in defeating Austria in any case; should they decline, it will be no skin off my teeth.

Luckily, they join, though their armies are out of position and will be of no aid for the crucial early months. Another hazard; Austria has long maintained a policy of interventionism in Italy, and the Italian states have joined the war in favour of their Austrian masters.

The war progresses slowly…

… but surely. The horse-standing man certainly adds charm to the occupation of Eisenstadt.

The first year of the war is tight, but as Prussia’s military might squashes Austria’s Spherelings, they drop out of the war. France is victorious in Belgium, and moves its own vast armies into Italy, removing them from the war as well. Austria stands alone. It is time to force Prussian hegemony over Austria – this will force their German SoI into Prussia’s.

It seems Austria has more to worry about; Sardinia-Piedmont has declared war to liberate Lombardia from Austrian control.

Hey, wait a minute! That’s my goal!

I think Sardinia-Piedmont can be safely ignored. Still, if they force the release of Lombardia before I do, I will destroy them.

Check out Austria’s score:

23. This puts my southern cousin FAR below the required score for Great Power status. I might not even form the North German Federation as a stepping-stone towards greater German Unification.

If I can add Austria and S-H to my sphere, there’ll be no need to form the NGF, though it is an excellent first step for Prussia, as it removes the need to defend your SoI from outside influence.

Austria is beaten! Baden, Wurttemburg, Saxony and Bavaria have all been taken into my Sphere and Lombardia has been liberated! France wanted to acquire the state of Trieste from Austria, but again I ignored French demands.

And news has reached me that the state of Hanover has had a falling-out with the United Kingdom; they are no longer within the British SoI, making the German state ripe for the picking. With Hanover, Schleswig-Holstein and Luxembourg nearly in my Sphere, Austria a broken and bloody corpse, and Russia still suffering from a disastrous economy, Prussia has found itself in a position of eminence in Europe.

And it’s only 1841! Five years of gameplay finds Prussia launched into third place among the Great Powers of the world, just behind France.

And far behind the Brits.

Next time: Taking on Russia and France.
